I installed a bypass for offshore work. It also has a benefit that if I
close the thru-hull, I can pump up into the tank to break up the
sludge. I discovered in 2000 that that sludge can thoroughly block the
outflow.

I have discovered that if you put a large Bail Sponge at the bottom of the
fridge, there is no more ice build-up on the holding plates and you have no
water at the bottom of the fridge. Interestingly enough, the bail sponge
stays roughly dry and in 1 month I had not to take it out once to press the
water out. Before I was drying out the bottom of my fridge every 10 days or

I seem to recall, years ago, when getting ready to depart Z-town on the milk
run to the Marquesas, Andre Kline filled the bilge with cans of good Mexican
beer. He stacked it everywhere! Now, in a Passport 47, that's a lot of beer.
But remember, prices out there in the islands are dear.
Well, anyway, all the way across, Barbara reported this strange fizzing

The idea is to keep the icy air in the box. I keep the valve closed unless I'm cleaning the box or there has been a spill. (Aluminum cans are not a good thing to carry in the fridge on a passage!)

I have one too near the stuffing box floor board. I think the idea is to retain icy water but don't forget to open it.

Hey, Donal! You have a drain cock on the tube? Where? Is this to conserve

Hey, Donal! You have a drain cock on the tube? Where? Is this to conserve
the cool air in the refer?
I just put the hose nozzle on the drain fitting and blast away.

Remove? No. Clean? Yes. Open the drain cock and pour hot soapy water in the fridge. Worked for me.

Dave,
Hello. You can check out the following to check for a blown head gasket.
However if you had one you would have other symptoms which you have not
described yet. One way to test for a blow head gasket is to use a "head
gasket tester tool". It is a device shaped like a rubber glass cone. You
warm up the engine somewhat, place tool over the expansion tank, add this

Is there a simple way to remove and clean the drain in the
refrigerator?

I replaced my old (original, from the shipyard)
hot water tank with a Seaward, a low-end but
low-cost and serviceable option. I bought it on
line from Defender. Installing it required very little carpentry and plumbing.
I think Isotemp is the top-of-the-line product,
and commensurately more expensive. I don´t know

On our Passport 40 we have a 10 gallon ABI hot water tank which needs
to be replaced. Has anyone found a suitable substitute? Dimensions
12.5 x 23 x 13 inches in height.

Check the hoses to/from the hot water heater. No leaks? OK, now bypass the heat exchanger in the hot water tank by connecting the two hoses. Now no leaks? You may get lucky. Oh, you could put red dye in the fresh water coolant and see where it goes.

You might try talking to somebody at a radiator shop to see if they would come down to the boat to pressure test the system.
Have you had any overheating problems? I had a blown headgasket on the car and the first idication was overheating. I also wonder if you are loosing any coolant. Do you have to add coolant to keep the o'flo bottle full?

Hi All,
I asked for help on finding a head gasket for a pathfinder (VW Diesel), but
then realized I should discribe the system:
1) I did not see an increase in the oil level. I would expect to see an
increase if the gasket was leaking.
2) Running the engine at high and low RPMs. Bubbles were coming
intermittently at low RPMs. They come roughly every 15 to 20 secs, but it is

No, but surely someone can match a new gasket to an old one (if you've got it, can scan it on both sides and can e-mail the scan/file to a VW addict/parts supplier. Good luck!

Hi all,
I have a Pathfinder VW Diesel, 1.6 L, engine. The block has a remanufactured
number on it, and the head has another serial number. Talking to one
supplier, they can not verify which head gasket I need. Has anyone with a
Pathfinder Engine gone through this?
Thanks
Dave

Now I like this topic as well.......
During our rebuild of Iemanja, we are going out of our way to keep access
good to the "garage" under the cockpit. Even went so far as to increase the
size of the entry opening by cutting out upwards as far as possible and
enlarging the door as well, so that we can get in and out easier.

Yes i need that info to, any help would be appreciated. Also would anyone
know the shaft length close emough. The dia is 1 1/4 and the current engine
is a nanni

I just have a standard Rubbermaid bin, about 36"
tall, freestanding in the galley, and use
standard plastic bags to line it. It pretty much
stays in the corner of the galley to the left
(aft) of the stove. Not your High Esthetic approach, but seems to work.
Doesn´t really get in the way because I never
